How to Compare Supplements Before Buying

A step-by-step approach to comparing supplements on the things that actually matter — dose, form, purity and value.

Compare the active dose, not the marketing

Two products can contain the same ingredient at wildly different amounts. Look past the front label and compare the Supplement Facts panel side by side, paying attention to the amount of the active compound per serving.

Consider the form

Some nutrients come in several chemical forms with different absorption characteristics. A cheaper form isn't always worse, and a premium form isn't always better — it depends on the specific nutrient.

Cost per serving = price ÷ servings per container. It's the only fair way to compare two bottles of different sizes.

Check for testing and quality

Third-party testing — from independent labs — offers an extra layer of confidence that what's on the label is what's in the bottle. It's not a guarantee of effectiveness, but it is a meaningful quality signal.

  • Look for verified third-party testing seals
  • Check for certificates of analysis where available
  • Note any allergen or contamination warnings
