How to Read a Supplement Label
Serving sizes, proprietary blends and percent daily values — learn how to interpret a supplement label before you buy.

The supplement facts panel
The Supplement Facts panel is the most useful place to start. It lists each ingredient, the amount per serving, and — where one exists — the percent of the Daily Value. Understanding this panel helps you compare products fairly rather than relying on front-of-pack marketing.
Serving size vs servings per container
A 'serving' may be one, two, or even three capsules. A bottle that looks like a 30-day supply might last only 10 days if the serving size is three. Always check servings per container before comparing price.
Daily Value (DV) percentages are based on general recommendations. Your individual needs may differ depending on age, diet, health status and other factors.
Proprietary blends
A proprietary blend lists several ingredients together under one total weight, without showing the amount of each. This makes it hard to know whether you're getting an effective dose of any single ingredient. Where possible, prefer products that disclose individual amounts.
Claims to watch for
Structure-function claims like 'supports energy' are common and don't require the same evidence as drug claims. Treat bold marketing language with healthy scepticism and look at the actual panel.
- Avoid products that claim to treat, cure or prevent disease
- Look for third-party testing seals where available
- Check the expiry date and storage instructions
